Kimi here and am back again this week with a new Unboxing and First Second Impressions for something that has been my long-time personal favorite from the 00 Gundam series, the HG00 Union Flag! Yes, we are going all old school here this week, I figured since we have been going back to back unboxing and reviewing newer kits recently. Why not this week we take a step back and take a look at an older HG kit.
This is really the perfect kit for the segment this week! Though this was a kit that I really came across by accident when I was hunting for some ‘old school’ kits for this weeks segment. As soon as I saw the box, I knew that I had to get this.
Looking at the box, I really can’t help to feel nostalgic. The 00 series was the first Gundam series that I was trying to try to collect but due to the nature of my work and the nature of my pay at the time…..caused me to be only able to collect three out of 71 00HG kit releases.
Yes, I know I fucked up really bad there. Well at the very least, if I decided to pick it at where I left off now it is still not too late….-ish.
Then again out of the three, only the HG Union Flag kit is the only one that really gets my attention more than the other HG 00 kits that I built at the time. Well, there are many reasons why and one of the reasons is this….
Yes, the awesome box art. I remember getting the Union Flag first before I got the Exia, and my reasons of getting the Union Flag at the tome wasn’t because of how it was portrayed in the anime. It was really because I was in love with the awesome box art and because of that beautifully designed MS. The Union Flag really does captures one’s eye when seeing it for the first time. I kind of get why Graham Aker is obsessed with the Flag now.
But as we move on to the unboxing… man, the nostalgia of building this kit hits me harder here. The reason being for this is because of just how all the runner parts looked, they all really looked as to how I remembered it! Yes, it may not be as impressive as how the current HG’s runners and parts are, but one can’t help to appreciate how nicely colored and neatly arranged all the runners here are. Everything is neatly molded and the quality of the plastic here is…I would say looks as good as the modern HG kits.
I would agree that it might be lacking details as what you would get with the HG Origins, but if we are comparing the parts that we are seeing here to the mainline HG’s runners… To be honest? It does look quite all right. Honestly, I do like how the parts look here. All the runners do look like something that was properly designed and all of them looked very neat, I wasn’t expecting this level of competence for a recently reproduced kit. Usually, the parts do have extra bits hanging on some of the parts, but not here.
Really Bandai did a damn good job on the reproduction of the parts here.
The manual for the Union Flag is still a joy to go through. Though this is still an untranslated manual. It was still a joy to go through, with all the lore attached to it. I do find that I really enjoyed my time going through the manual again the second time. The building instructions here is still just like how I remembered it to be and looking at this I really can’t help to really look forward to once again get my hands dirty working on this particular kit.
Regardless, the manual is one that I really need to go through and re-experience again during the building process to see if it is as good as I remembered it.
Though it must be said that I’m actually quite worried if this wouldn’t be as good as how it was when I first built it back in 2007. I am worried that all the awesome feeling that I felt back when I built this for the first time would just be gone. However, at the same time, I’m really looking forward to building this awesome kit again, and relive some of the memories I had when I build this the first time.
I really hope that this would be a good walk down to the memory lane for me.
With that ends this round of Unboxing and First Impressions for the HG 1/144 SVMS-01 Union Flag (HG00)! What do you guys think of the Unboxing this time? This is really one kit that I was really looking forward to getting into again building this and go into a nostalgia trip.
One that I hope wouldn’t take me too far down the memory lane, haha.
Anyways, we will be back again this week more Let’s Talk Gunpla Segment on the coming Wednesday and we will be back as well on the coming Sunday with my final thoughts on the P-Bandai MG 1/100 MS-14B Gelgoog High-Mobility Type Uma Lighting Custom (MG)! So, do look forward to that!
