MGEXpensive
HELLO! We are back!
In Today’s 207th edition of our Let’s Talk Gunpla segment, we will be talking about one particular retail release announcement that was made a few days back. The new Gunpla line-up announcement that we are going to be talking in today’s segment has been making waves on the internet, for both good and bad reasons.
I’m sure by now that most of you here might have already know what is the new Gunpla line up that we are talking about here.
So, without further ado, let us get into it, shall we?
MGEX 1/100 RX-0 Unicorn Gundam Ver.Ka (MGEX)
MGEX 1/100 RX-0 Unicorn Ver. Ka (MGEX)
Release Date: September 2020
Estimated price: JPY 20,700 (MYR RM 825.22* / USD $ 192.56* / EUR € 171.35*)

Interesting and Frustrating.
These were the two things that we thought about when we saw the MGEX announcement. There are quite a few good reasons for that, and we are sure that you guys have an idea of what one of them is.
But before we talk about THAT particular elephant in the room, let us cover the positives first, shall we?
Because after we took the time to go through all the MGEX Unicorn Ver. Ka’s promotional materials, from what we can gather it seems like the MGEX Unicorn Ver. Ka development and redesign was closely supervised by Mr.Katoki Hajime.
Bandai finding new ways to milk the pony up, so much so that they decided to make a completely new MG line up so they could continue milking the white pony and all the other ponies
But to be honest, we aren’t all that sure what that means. Is that an indication which means that this kit will have a much more elaborate inner frame system when compared to all the other previous MG Unicorn releases and will it fix some of the issues that the MG Unicorn Ver. Ka has?
That is something that we are still unsure of, but admittedly there are some things that we noticed here and there after we take some time to analyze the MGEX Unicorn Ver. Ka’s promotional materials.
From the looks of it, this version of the MGEX Unicorn Ver. Ka looks a tad more detailed when compared to its other MG variants. Even when we compared it to its MG Ver. Ka versions this version looked even more detailed than that. Even the MGEX Unicorn Ver. Ka’s Psychoframe looked like that it had more details on it when you compared it to all the existing MG variants.
However, funnily enough even despite that being said, we here do feel like the MGEX looked more like an rescaled RG kit. Which is not a bad thing considering we are a huge fan of the RG version looks.
Another interesting bit about this kit is that it as well comes with a new custom made LED system made especially for the kit, which is something that we do admit that we here find quite interesting. Because Bandai decided to use the flexible LED sheet system here for the MGEX Unicorn Ver. Ka. But upon closer inspection, it does make us wonder if this is the same LED system that we see with the PG kit? Because at first glance it does look quite similar.
Regardless, we do look forward to seeing it in action.
Somehow rather this particular LED system look really familiar
The MGEX Unicorn as well comes with alot of goodies too, like 3 shield units, for you to use to recreate some of the famous battle scenes with the shield, the Awesome MS Cage, and really good looking Waterslide decals.
Overall at first, this kit does sounds to be quite promising to all of us here, up until you saw the asking price for it.
This is one of the things that we are quite frustrated about, that is why we shall now talk about it here.
Because for one for an MG kit this is just a tad too expensive. Yes even though we do admit that it is still cheaper than getting a PG Unicorn with its LED unit combine, but still, an MG kit with a PG price? Isn’t that a little bit much don’t you think?
Admittedly, one can make the argument that this kit does come with alot of extras and not to mention they probably made some improvements to the frame as well. But still, I don’t like to repeat myself here but seriously can you justify getting a 1/100 scaled kit at a 1/60 price tag? Especially considering, you can get the excellent PG Unicorn with that kind of asking price.
Expensive and as well it comes with alot of extras…so do you think it’s a kit worth investing in?
It wasn’t as well helped with its confusing marketing, because initially, we thought that this is a P-Bandai exclusive kit, and knowing that made us even more disappointed with the release. But thanks to us taking the time to re-read some more of the MGEX Unicorn Ver. Ka’s promotional material, only then we realize that the kit was still coming for the retail side, but instead would have 2 versions, one released by the retail side and another released by the infamous P-Bandai.
But the only difference between the two versions is that they just come with different boxarts. Just like how they did it with the RG Unicorn, but this time, instead of having two boxart versions released under the retail banner, they instead split the release of two versions to two separate entities, the retail side, and the P-Bandai side.
So that as well means that there will be one version of the kit that would needlessly expensive because it had the P-Bandai tax slapped on it.
Regardless of what we may feel, we do admit that this is a very interesting release coming from Bandai. It has been quite a while since an MG Unicorn announcement made us excited and even despite the insane asking price, we here do look forward to the day that we finally have the new MGEX Unicorn Ver. Ka in the Homebase.
Hopefully, this first iteration of the MGEX didn’t end up becoming like the RG lineup when it first started. By releasing a kit that was better suited to become a hand grenade than a Gunpla kit.
With that concludes today’s 207th edition of our Let’s Talk Gunpla segment! What do you think of this particular retail release announcement? Are you looking forward to this particular retail release? When we all saw the announcement for this we are quite honestly, very excited about it. Eventhough yes we are getting another Unicorn Gundam, but unlike the other releases, this does look quite promising.
We are quite honestly interested in seeing how different this version is when we compare it to all the previous MG releases? Will this be better than its counterparts? Or will this kit will be the one to bring the MG line back to its former glory. Time will tell soon enough.
Anyways, we will be back again with some more new gunpla related posts on the next coming Monday! So do look forward to that!
