Let’s Talk Gunpla Vol.240

We are excitedly disappointed.

HELLO! We are back!

In today’s 240th edition of our Let’s Talk Gunpla segment, we will be now taking the time to talk about that new, hot reveal PG that has everyone talking recently and see what all the fuss is.

So without further ado, let us get into it, shall we?

PG 1/60 RX-78-2 Gundam ‘PG UNLEASHED’ (PG)

Release Date: December 2020
Estimated price: JPY 23,700 (MYR RM 927.83* / USD $ 224.22* / EUR € 189.70*)

After a long wait, we finally get to see the full reveal of the PG Grandpa Ver.2.0 or better known as the PG Unleashed Grandpa. But somehow, instead of being excited about this PG release, we instead find ourselves having some serious misgivings about this newest iteration of the PG Grandpa.

But before we get to that, lets first talk about what we liked about it.

First of all, let’s talk about its looks because we all here do think that this PG Unleashed grandpa is without, a doubt, an insanely good looking kit. From its insides and its full up-armored look, we can’t imagine anyone not falling in love with it when they witness its full war-winning glory. We have to commend Bandai for a job well done here because man, this is by far one of the best-looking grandpas that we’ve seen to date.

But we are as well impressed with the fact that they managed added some badass Photo-etched parts in together with the kit as well, which does indicate to us that we would have a real fun time working on this badass PG kit from start to finish!

What’s even more impressive is the fact that they managed to include in an LED system. Which we admit looks quite interesting, because somehow it looked like an LED system that akin to what you see with the MGEX’s.

What we meant by this is not the LED system itself, but it is more towards the lighting ‘modes’ that it has. Because after we spent time looking at it, it is nice to know that the LED unit has different lighting modes/programs available for us to use to display this new PG Grandpa.

Yes, we do think that this PG kit looked impressive overall.

So, now you might be wondering, what is our issue with this then?

Well, the thing is, despite the kit looking impressive overall, but we somehow can’t ignore some sacrifices made to this PG kit when we compared it to the older version. Like for instance, some bits here and there with the PG Grandpa Unleashed inner frame bits. Yes, even though there was more effort made here to make this version’s inner frame part looked better than its older counterpart. But there are a few parts here and there on the PG Grandpa Unleashed here that we feel is quite lacking. For example, the PG Grandpa Unleashed head unit inner frame missing the ventilation faceplate and the low effort ‘MG Ver.2.0 inspired’ design on its feet unit.

What’s more upsetting here is that we found out that this PG kit comes with a fixed manipulator set system. Usually, on other Gunpla line ups, this matter might not be such a big issue for us, no. But we didn’t expect to see this on a PG kit on a FREAKKING PERFECT GRADE kit. One would expect Bandai to work on further improving the older PG Manipulator system, which we hoped would fix all the issues that it may have. Or they could’ve as well crate a completely new full-motion manipulator system. But no, they just decided to take a much lazier path and give us something mediocre on a PG kit instead.

Honestly, we do find it funny that after taking a much closer look at this, only to find that there are some parts that the much older PG Grandpa does better when we compare it to this, the newer version of the PG Grandpa. Which we do admit that we find this to be quite upsetting, considering that we always thought that PG’s to be a no-compromise, top of the line Gunpla line-up and the omission of certain things does take away what makes a PG kit a PG kit for us.

Granted, we know that the kit is not out yet, and it may still end up being a great PG kit. But after seeing it we really can’t help to feel a bit disappointed.

Anyways, that concludes our 240th edition of the Let’s Talk Gunpla segment. Even though we ended it in a somber mood, we are still looking forward to getting it. Admittedly, we would love to see how this would compare to its much older counterpart. Will this be a massive improvement over the older version? Or will it be a disappointment instead?

That is something that we would love to find out, and hopefully, we would be able to rack up enough moolahs to be able to get both of em here in the Homebase.

Anyways, we will be back again this coming Tuesday (hopefully) with more Gunpla/ Gundam merch related posts for this blog. So do look forward to that :D!
