Let’s Talk Gunpla Vol.329

Talking about all the new 1/100 retail releases

HELLO! We are back!

In today’s 329th edition of our Let’s Talk Gunpla segment, we will be looking at the retail side’s latest and quite substantial Gunpla release announcements! Interestingly, now we finally get to see some of the long-awaited Gunpla Next reveal’s final details and release date in this batch of new Gunpla retail release announcements.

So, without further ado, let us get into it, shall we?

MG 1/100 MS-09 Dom (MG)

Release Date: February 2022
Estimated price: JPY 5,500 (MYR RM 210.35* / USD $ 50.20* / EUR € 42.85*)
*The price is subject to change, depending on the situation

Out of all the Gunpla release announcements that we see coming this time, the MG Dom is probably one of the most interesting ones out of all the new 1/100 kit release details.

Why?

Well, that’s because when we saw the announcement of this new version of the MG Dom, we were expecting it to get that Ver.2.0 MG treatment, but it seems like that might not be the case here. From what we can see here, it looked more like it might only get a minor Ver.1.5 update instead of getting a complete revamp.

So those unfamiliar with the original MG Dom and is unsure what upgrades that this newer version gets. Well, let us take the time to break the updates down for you here.

The only updates that this new version of the MG Dom is getting that we can see here are on new articulation gimmicks taken from one of the improvements made on P-Bandai’s 2019 MG Dwadge release. So, what that means is that this new MG Dom gets the new shoulder unit, waist, thigh connector, and leg joints. All of these new updates we feel will further improve upon some parts of the articulation.

However, the rest of this kit seems to be getting the same things the original release of the MG Dom gets. So we are not expecting the rest to be any different than what we see with the original iteration of the MG Dom. Which we would admit is quite disappointing.

Why?

Well, that is because we hoped that Bandai would make an effort to fix the MG Dom’s brittle arm part issue.

But even with that said, we still have hope that, at the very least, this kit uses the modern plastic material mix on its parts. Because honestly, one of the things that we noticed with the older MG Doms is that the plastic materials on some sections of this are quite brittle. Hence the reason why we implored Bandai to at least fix the arm part. We reckon the reason for its brittleness is due to the plastic mix that they used on the older version.

If they couldn’t be bothered to make a new arm part, at the very least improve on the materials used to make them. Hopefully, that would somewhat fix it.

Oh, by the way, speaking, about this being more and less the same.

MG 1/100 MS-09R Rick Dom (MG)

Release Date: March 2022
Estimated price: JPY 5,500 (MYR RM 210.35* / USD $ 50.20* / EUR € 42.85*)
*The price is subject to change, depending on the situation

Yes, they as well announced the MG Rick dom too. Well, it is not a surprise considering that we already knew about this release since they revealed both of them earlier this year.

Since the MG Rick Dom is just a space-use version of the Dom, that means all the new upgrades that the 2021 version of the MG Dom gets, the 2021 version of the MG Rick Dom got it as well.

But what sets this one apart from the other is that the MG Rick Dom comes with a different set of weapons and pieces of equipment. Well, when we say different, what we mean is that it comes with a new sole set, a new vernier set for its backpack unit, and as well for the under the skirt verniers. Oh, not forgetting here, this version as well comes with that badass Beam Cannon.

That’s all, really, because the rest is just the same thing that you get with the MG Dom. Well, minus all the other awesome weapons the MG Dom got as well.

But that means we as well have the same concerns here too. Hopefully, we’ll see them make the same material improvements on the upcoming MG Rick Dom as well. Because honestly, our hearts wouldn’t be able to take it if the arm disintegrates itself while posing the darn thing.

We also think it is nice of Bandai to release the two MG Doms in separate months. It’s like they know most of us here will need time to save up to get another.

It’s nice to see Bandai being considerate of our financial difficulties.

HiRM 1/100 MBF-P02 Gundam Astray Red Frame “Powered Red” (High-Resolution Model)

Release Date: March 2022
Estimated price: JPY 17,600 (MYR RM 673.12* / USD $ 160.63* / EUR € 137.11*)
*The price is subject to change, depending on the situation

The news of the upcoming release of the HiRM Astray Red Frame Powered Red is a surprise to us all here.

Why?

Well, that’s because we expected to see this version of the Astray Red Frame released as an MG kit first before seeing it as a HiRM kit. But we feel that after seeing this HiRM version, there might be a good reason why the Powered Red variant sees release as a HiRM kit first.

Because we figured that after we took the time to compare the MG and the HiRM version, we feel that the shoulder mount on the MG version kit might not be able to sustain the large arm unit without breaking the peg.

But unlike the MG version, the HiRM kit does look like it could handle the stress well because the whole thing was designed to be bulky and could handle heavier loads, unlike the lankier MG version.

Not to mention, we like how the HiRM beefcake Astray looks suits the powered arm unit as if in like they designed the HiRM Astray from the start to be able to do this. Plus, we also like that the Powered Arm seems to be able to be fully articulated. It doesn’t look like the manipulator unit needed separate parts to handle the badass Gerbera Straight sword.

Honestly? We are really impressed by that feat.

Out of the new 1/100 scaled kits announcements here, this HiRM Astray variant might be the one that we are looking forward to the most. Hopefully, we’ll be able to save up enough to get this beefier beefcake Astray.

With that concludes our 329th edition of the Let’s Talk Gunpla segment for today. Pretty interesting 1/100 retail line-up here. Not the strongest retail release announcement that we’ve seen to date, but it is one that we had a lot of fun going through.
