Let’s Talk Gunpla Vol.516

Metallic SEEDS

HELLO! We are back!

In today’s 516th edition of our Let’s Talk Gunpla segment, we’ll discuss one of Gundam Base Limited’s latest Gunpla release announcements. Honestly? We saw this announcement already when they announced the RG v Gundam First Lot Color Version.

However, we decided not to include our discussion of this Gundam Base Limited release since we had mixed feelings about it. But after we took more time to process our feelings on this, we feel more comfortable sharing our thoughts on this release now.

So, without further ado. Let us get into it, shall we?

Mobile Suit Gundam SEED 20th Anniversary MS Set [METTALLIC]

Estimated price: JPY 8,800 (MYR RM 286.34* / USD $ 61.12* / EUR € 55.70*)

20 years huh? We still find it hard to believe it’s already 20 years since the SEED series first aired on TV.

We were still studying in middle school when it first aired, and we remembered vividly the intro OP controversy. Why do we think of it, you ask? Well, it’s because it was funny seeing how parents were pissed off knowing that an uncensored anime boobies is bouncing around in an opening of a cartoon that was supposed to be for kids. Also, it was the last Gundam series getting the 50-episode per season treatment. After the SEED Destiny series finished airing, they stuck with the 25 episodes per season format and eventually settled for 25 episodes per series format.

But what we remembered most about this series is not the controversies (or the boobies) but the MS designs and all the awesome HGSEED, No-Grade 1/100, MG, PG, and eventually RG kits we got.

So, to celebrate the 20th Anniversary of the SEED series, the Gundam Base Limited chaps decided to re-release and repackage two of the previously released Gundam Base Limited Metallic Coated RG kits based on the two iconic protag SEED MS designs. But that is not all we got here. They also included one Antagonist HGSEED kit in this 20th-anniversary set.

So, what are you getting here?

In this set, you’re getting Metallic versions of the RG Freedom*, RG Justice* (*previously released by the Gundam Base Limited side), and HGSEED Providence Gundam.

Yes, you’re getting three kits in this box set. But the thing that we find fascinating is the fact that out of the three kits, we find we are most interested in the HGSEED Providence.

Why?

Well, out of the three kits, somehow, the HGSEED Providence ends up being the best-looking one. Somehow, the metallic finish looks good on the HGSEED Providence Gundam compared to the RG Freedom and RG Justice. We suspect it might be due to the darker color scheme of the HGSEED Providence that made it look so good in the metallic coating.

But that is not to say both the RG Freedom and RG Justice don’t look good with the Metallic coating. They do. It’s just that the HGSEED Providence stands out so much that it makes the rest look pale in comparison.

I know it’s weird for us to say, considering that I’m comparing an HG kit to an RG one, but this is one of those things where an HG kit looked better than its much better RG counterpart.

Admittedly, we find it strange that they mix in the RG kits and the HGSEED together in this set. Why didn’t the Gundam Base Limited chaps have it come with the HGSEED version of Freedom and Justice instead for this set? Wouldn’t that be a much more appropriate way to release a 20th-anniversary kit bundle set?

But even with that said, admittedly, we are interested in getting this 20th Anniversary bundle since we are fans of the series. We hope it is still available when we visit a Gundam Base shop soon.

And that concludes our 516th edition of the Let’s Talk Gunpla segment. It’s nice to finally cover this before we move on with our retail discussion. We’re really looking forward to that!

Anyway, we’ll be back this coming Saturday (hopefully) with a new blog post. So do look forward to it!
