Let’s Talk Gunpla Vol.578

The perfect sequel?

HELLO! We are back!

In today’s 578th edition of our Let’s Talk Gunpla segment, we’ll discuss one of the most surprising announcements from the Gundam Base Limited that we’ve seen in months. One that none of us expected to see in light of the recent announcement from the P-Bandai side.

So, without further ado. Let us get into it, shall we?

HG 1/144 The Gundam Base Limited YG-111 G-Self Perfect Pack [‘Reconguista in G’ Movie Ver.](HGRG)

Release Date: 26th October, 2024
Estimated price: JPY 3,850 (MYR 110.69* / USD 25.82* / EUR 23.58*)

Out of all the Gunpla release announcements we have seen this year, this is probably the one we were all quite surprised to see announced. Why are we surprised, you ask?

Well, for one, we didn’t even know that they had already released all five movies in four years. Most surprisingly of all, why didn’t Bandai release more Gunplas in support of the movies, and why now?

Despite what people might feel about the G-Reco series, the one thing that we all can agree on is that the mecha designs are some of the best we’ve seen. What’s more, the Gunplas that they released during the anime’s run are also really fun to work on. Despite how badly the anime performed, we remember that the Gunplas were selling well during this time.

So, you can understand why we are baffled by this move by Bandai.

But we wonder if they fixed all the pacing issues and confusing edits that plagued the Anime series with the five movies they released. Honestly, that is the only reason why fewer people are interested in this series. We would love to give this another go as long as they fix all the issues with the storytelling. Did they fix the issues from the series with the movie? It would be interesting to hear from you guys who have watched all the films on this matter.

But enough about our hopes and dreams for the movie. Let’s discuss what we think of the ‘Movie’ version of the perfect pack G-Self.

When we looked at the movie version, both seemed pretty similar. So we decided to look in detail at the difference between this and the anime series version. What we found is that some changes were made, but not that obvious. One must have at least experience building the original version to notice the subtle changes made to the movie version.

For instance, this version has a clear chest vent cover, while the same thing is absent in the original. The head unit is the other change we noticed when comparing this to the original. The head unit of the movie version had a more prominent primary camera (aka the eyes). It looked closer to the anime/movie version than what we got with the original version. However, we admit that we liked the original version’s head unit design more than what we got with the movie version because it does look more badass and less goofy.

Despite the changes we got with the movie version, admittedly, much of the base kit is still the same one we got back in 2015, so we expect it to be more or less the same kit.

Even with that said, the original versions are pretty hard to get nowadays, so it’s nice to know we are getting something like a slightly updated reprint here. Also, most fans of the Perfect Pack G-self (like us) wouldn’t want to give this a pass.

So we’re quite excited about this release. It might be a same-ish kit, but we are more than happy to work on the movie version since we had quite a fun working on the original version.

But you know what would be better? If Bandai had the guts to release the MG G-Self Ver.Ka now.

This concludes the 578th edition of the Let’s Talk Gunpla segment. We didn’t expect to see the Gundam Base Limited, out of all people, be the one to announce this. We thought the P-Bandai would want to take advantage of this, but it is nice that they let the Gundam Base side have this one.

Although it is still hard to get, at the very least, there is a possibility that we can still stumble upon this whenever we visit any Gundam Base Limited stores selling at MSRP prices, unlike the P-Bandai kits, which are easier to find but good luck trying to find one selling at MSRP prices.

Anyhow.
